NAYA Census Infographic

I was asked NAYA program to create a guide that is usable in providing key information for the U.S. Census. Using principles of design, I transformed a difficult to access document into a guide with a visual structure that allows readers to extract information effortlessly.

This guide had gone through several iterations of edits and I was challenged in balancing the needs of all involved community partners. Regular communication and responsiveness to feedback were required to create a resource that worked for all stakeholders

My first time using Inkscape, this project demonstrates my ability to research and self-teach many features of a new graphics application within a relatively short period of time.

Syllabus Redesign

For a document design class, I was challenged to redesign the course syllabus. Assessing the audience, purpose, and context for this document, I responded by making edits and design choices that supported the rhetorical situation.

Heretto Datasheet

This project was created for a course on the use of DITA as an XML format for content management of single-sourced information. The assignment involved developing a datasheet in Heretto CCMS to compile and instruct users on the ins and outs of cinematography. The process of creating the data sheet was an excellent opportunity to try out topic-based authoring when creating HTML and PDF outputs.

Website Design

A basic familiarity with the inner organizational workings of any object or series of processes is critical for technical writers. A website works as both. This project helped sharpen my sense of how things should flow visually and schematically. This sense is essential for my current job as an opinion survey technician, requiring the ability to create decision trees out of generic preferences. I can now fully diagram this process in visual documentation. It's a skill that will be critical for illustrating any process involving conditional control statements, which are vital in working as a survey researcher.

Oregon Health Authority Persona

Creating personas was an exciting opportunity to use creative, outside-the-box thinking to depict a somebody whose life story and challenges seemed authentic. This included examining user answers and demographic data while also keeping track of classmates' identities so that my own reflected someone from a background that had yet to be well represented. Simply thinking about consumers in this manner helped to develop an empathic approach.
